Final Project Overview

DESCRIPTION
Today’s Internet provides a virtually unlimited supply of information. Just how much is there?

With the advent of social media, it is easy to locate experts and follow their work. Indeed, many have become avid Internet users and are willing to share their creative thoughts, perceptions and knowledge about the use of technology in education. Indeed, the Internet, itself, is a publishing medium.

For your final project, you will design, develop and establish a Personal (Professional) Learning Network (PLN). Such a network consists of participation in learning communities, following the work of experts or content contributions of others, while using a variety of social networking and other tools. You may have an informal network established prior to this class or may have even engaged in a similar activity. In both cases, use the time to refine and extend your network.

PLNs are dynamic, just as your personal life. New friends are made, new sources of information are gathered, and these change over time. Every few years, conscientious thought given to your PLN will help you to refine it. You may want to prune your list of “friends” on social media platforms, delete or join networks or communities, remove sources from feed aggregators (mobile device news readers such as Flipboard and Pulse), and even adjust your personal goals.

During the last two weeks of class, you should be extending and testing your PLN instead of just writing it down on paper. Join or monitor networks and communities, add to your Twitter following, or like appropriate Facebook pages to determine if your choices are appropriate.

The final version of your PLN should minimally include:

  • Your professional goals in terms of your target audiences).
  • Content focus (e.g.. mobile technology, STEM, staff development).
  • Content aggregation (how you will gather or receive information from various sources).
  • Technology tools (for interacting with colleague or following experts).
  • Individuals, organizations and networks to connect with.
  • Knowledge or resource sharing methods.

Your final project will be evaluated based on the rubric below.
