Description
Introduce yourself to the class in a creative and interesting manner that gives a lasting impression about you. If it has a running time, the time should not exceed 120 seconds. The minimum length is 30 seconds, shorter is better.

You may choose to remix media from Creative Commons in lieu of creating a product from scratch. Learn more about Creative Commons through frequently asked questions.

Assessment
This assignment will be graded based on interestingness, clarity, timely completion, lasting impression, and feedback from class members.

Procedure

  • Brainstorm ideas about how and what to say about yourself. If necessary, script it out roughly. Actually, it will be more natural and interesting if it isn’t scripted in detail. Refer to other individuals only by first name or nickname.
  • Use an online tool or mobile applications (apps) to produce your introduction. Some suggestions: Animoto, Slide.ly, Pinterest, Pixorial, Haiku Deck, Projeqt, Prezi, PowToons, Jing or Screenr. Animoto and Slide.ly may also be accessed from Facebook, in which case, your photos may be used directly. PowerPoint or similar "traditional" applications (Keynote, Google Presentation, etc.) MAY NOT be used.
  • You may select any tool. My students have found screencasting applications, Screenr and Jing, easy to use and produces quick results. Typically, they are used in combination with other apps.
  • Your story may be in the form of a slide show or a video with or without narration. Or, it may also be presented as an info graphic or a poster. Try to incorporate multiple media, i.e., images, graphics, video and text into your product.
  • Include a photo, image or avatar of yourself that you are willing to share.
  • If needed, create an account at the website providing the production tool. Often, you may use your social media account (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to log in.
  • Produce your product. Have fun!
  • When completed, add a comment to this page and post the link to your intro along with a brief introductory statement (25-50 words). To do so, use the Comment box at the bottom of this page.
Interact with your peers
Interact online with your class members

My ETEC 642 Intro video was created entirely using Free/open source software. My laptop operating system is Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon. I used OpenShot to compile the images and video and Audacity for the narration track.I don't have a GoPro so the canoe surfing video was shot using an old Olympus camera strapped with a large rubber band to the front ama of the canoe. The video did loose some quality from the original when attached to my blog.

      1. Hi Dal,
Great intro! I remember seeing a prior intro in one of our classes and its great to see you expanding into different tools. I really enjoyed the music that you used as well as the video. How do you like using audacity? I have been bouncing back and forth between audacity as well as Garageband. It has been a really great experience and I am always happy to view others work with that tool.

As I mentioned below in another comment if/when I move back to Hawaii I have made it my goal to become way more active in marine sports and your video definitely piqued my interest.

Anyway, great post and as always I look forward to working with you this semester.

      2. Hi Dal,
I enjoyed watching your introduction video. I learned that you love the outdoors, such as running, paddling, surfing, and biking. In the photo, your 30 year old BMW looks like it's in really good condition. I also noticed that you are a fanatic about flying airplanes. I take my kids to watch the airplanes land and take off near our airport here on Maui. I am trying to pressure my son who is currently 4 to become a pilot one day.

You did well with incorporating the pictures, music, and narration. Your voice level and pace flowed well with the music. I was able to hear you and understand what you were saying while listening to the music. It was enjoyable. Thank you so much for sharing your introduction. Great Job!

When I downloaded your video, only the audio appeared but I couldn't see any of the pictures or video. I did like the music though, the ukulele totally matched Hawaii and your surfing section at the end.

    3. Aloha Everyone,
My ETEC 642 Intro was made in the palm of my hand through the use of the iPhone app, Stellar. I was turned onto the iPad version of this app (Storehouse) by Chester in a past class and the iPhone version was just released a few months ago. All of the images/videos I took were from my iPhone 5s in Hawaii and Japan. The app doesn't allow in app editing of images or video, so I had to do that beforehand in some of the apps already found on my phone.

I thought this app was a great way for people people to tell stories on the go and I hope you enjoy.
Looking forward to seeing you all this semester.

Great introduction, I like the book style format with the flipping pages. I also thought that the ability to include videos allowed for a great multisensory presentation. Itʻs interesting to know that the app Stellar is a relative of Storehouse as I used that app for my multimedia introduction. Do you know if there is a way to embed a Stellar story into a site somehow?

I am always fascinated by your journeys through Japan. The settings that you share are breathtaking and I am inspired to hopefully visit some of them myself someday. Mahalo for sharing once again and for introducing us to another great tool.

This was a neat introduction. I like how you mixed the videos and pictures with your captions. It was short and interesting. The book format was a nice touch as well. I really enjoyed Japan when I visited in 2002 and I have always wanted to go back one day. I'm glad you are enjoying it there.

It was truly creative to use the "Turning page" effect. Simply taking things for granted on how technology makes things so easy for us. We grew up with books and pages to turn....so easily forgotten.
Thank you for the reminder. Very much enjoyed.

I, too, enjoyed the turning page effect as well as your beautiful pics and interesting videos of Japan. I hope to make it there one day! Look forward to having you in class again. Thanks for the tip on Steller - will be adding it to my presentation toolkit! Mahalo for sharing.

Lovely intro piece. I wasn't aware of the iPhone app Stellar until now. It would seem this app would be good to use in designing something for m-learning. I believe in the future there will be a solution to app editing of images/video to make the process easier. The book turning feature is useful and I can see using something like this for my business. Again, nicely done piece.

      1. Hi Mark,
Thanks so much for sharing about your amazing experience at Apples WWDC conference in 2011. I was really impressed with all of the different elements that make up this event, as well as getting to see Steve Jobs. Amazing! I also really liked your Slidly. I have used it before in the past but wasn't aware of the many features that you incorporated into your slide show. I was really impressed with the music video that you had playing along with the slide show. It fit perfectly for your theme. I would love to have seen how going to that event has shaped your use of technology today, especially towards the use of Apple Products (perhaps being in this program is already a sign).

Really looking forward to working with you and see you in class.

This was great video. That looked like a crazy conference that you got to attend. I really like how the youtube video with the music appears in the bottom right corner of your main video. It is kind of fun to watch both videos playing at the same time and it kind of gives the artists of the song credit in a new way. That was a cool idea, how did you do that?

Wow, what an amazing experience! To see Steve Jobs’ last keynote is so special and I can see why you chose the accompanying song. I really like how you organized your presentation, taking us step by step into what you experienced that day. Have you attended any WWDC since then? You’ve motivated me to check out Slide.ly and possibly use it for future presentations. It looks like a really cool program. Mahalo for sharing!

      6. Hey Mark. The WWDC Conference is a new topic for me, so your presentation exposed me to something that I otherwise probably never would have become familiar with. I was also unfamiliar with Slide.ly, so your project was a double dose of learning. Given the areas we're studying, it is certainly relevant to this course and also shows that you're someone who eagerly seizes upon opportunities to learn more subjects related to educational technology. Overall, I believe your project effectively delivered a message, told a story, and even set a somewhat bittersweet mood - all of which came together to make it clear and interesting. If anything needs to be changed, I would recommend using a bit more variety in your pictures and omitting the loop so that the project does not automatically repeat (minor things). I look forward working with you once again, especially since you are so passionate about what we do!

One of the joys of my life is of being of service to others through volunteer work with the U.S. Coast Guard AUX in Santa Monica, CA. Thank you very much for your thoughtful words. I LOVE music and the notion that you volunteer your time to different musical charities. My family is actively involved in music. My oldest son (Josh) is a professional violinist and the younger (Josiah James) is a percussionist studying Music at UH Manoa. My first adventure into fund raising for young aspiring musicians came out of the need to raise funds for Josh's debut at Sydney Opera House when he was 16. I reached out to prominent and affluent business folk in Santa Monica who loved music. From this experience, I began to do the same for other young aspiring musicians who did not have the means to achieve their dreams of performing at great venues/stages. In a word, rewarding!

You did a great job of telling a story and enhancing it through the use of Animoto - your pictures were interesting, the music complemented the theme, and your timing was just right (slow enough to read and get a glimpse of the photos, fast enough to hold the viewer's attention). The presentation was also well-organized with succinct, clearly-written captions making it easy to understand and enjoy. The content you chose for the presentation certainly made an impression: great photos that you took yourself, why you chose to learn how to sew, elaborate costumes, and digitally manipulated sci-fi images. It would have been great if the "Animoto" watermark wasn't all over everything, but I'm not sure that anything could have been done about that.

      6. Hi James, yes music would be a great addition! However, in a sense I feel that without the music, it allows the audience to focus on the content without distraction though. Looking forward to working with you this semester too!

Hi Kainoa, thank you for your word of encouragement! I didn’t know you can use Haiku Deck on an Ipad but I would imagine it to be quite intuitive to use, thanks for the tip! Wasn’t sure if the humor was going to work or not (there’s always a risk!) so now I feel relieved!  -Kitty Hino

Hi Coby, thank you for your comment. Yes, it’s been fun moving to Hawaii! Can’t wait to explore more of the 808!

Hi Kaulanna, yes you should definitely try to write to Santa with your students! They can reply in any language you write to them. I did it with elementary school kids in Japan and they absolutely loved it!

Hi Faith, yes I really am from the “down under” and I love Vegemite!

      7. Kitty - Your presentation was a lot of fun to watch! I loved how it was upbeat, had a lot of variety, and at the same time told a great story. The pictures seemed to be of high quality, which made the whole project very aesthetically pleasing. With all this stimulation, it is easy to pay attention and therefore remember the content. Needless to say, your introduction certainly makes an impression on the viewer! The application you chose to use (Haiku Deck) is new to me, and is one that I would like to learn more about to see if it might be good for younger students to use. Does Haiku Deck also allow you to use music? If so, this might be something to consider for future projects.

I really enjoyed your introduction on Haiku Deck. I've never used it before what are your thoughts about it? I looks like you have had a lot of exciting adventures and accomplishments! The photos you used were amazing! I liked the big font you used to describe each picture. It helped to tell your story. My favorite slide was the one with the "Nake men"! It made me giggle. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for sharing your Animoto. I really liked this tool as it gives a great/quick intro on who you are and your interests. I wish they could have at least given us free users 60 seconds as 30 seconds was always too short for me. I think I got the gist of what you were saying and i am really excited to be working with you this semester. Now that I live in Japan I have made it my goal to be way more active in marine sports if/when I move back to Hawaii. I hope you can get in that barrel soon and I will see you in class.

I've seen several animoto presentations now and I think I need to go and tinker with it in a bit. It seems very effective and I love the transitions and design of the slides. I really enjoyed your intro. It’s a bummer we only get 30 seconds for free, but you were able to share a lot about yourself in that short time! Do you teach at a middle school on Maui? I have a lot of family there and I love going there to visit. Where was the photo taken of you and your siblings? It must be so fun to get to experience new places as a family. I’m hoping to do a lot more traveling with my family once I’m pau with school. Mahalo for sharing!

First of all, your puppy in the photo is adorable. I learned that you enjoy the outdoors, such as surfing and hiking. I love that you not only included photos of you, but of your family as well. Family is everything. The music that you included seemed to fit right into your personality. I hope when my kids grow up they will be close and may be even travel together, just like you and your siblings.

I know that animoto only allows 30 seconds with the free version. However, I think you were able to include those important aspects of your life. I have used animoto before and found it really easy to use. Thank you so much for sharing. Great pictures.

I agree that no one should ever settle in life if they want to be happy. All those pictures of food made me hungry, but they were beautiful, vibrant photos along with all your others pictures. What a great first go at Prezi. Your presentation was easy to follow and was very clean. I wasnʻt aware that you could upload music into a Prezi and Iʻm excited to explore that feature. The work that you do rescuing these poor abandoned animals is commendable. It sounds like you must give off some kind "good vibes" that these little guys can sense, because it seems as if they are drawn to you, and its quite lucky for them that they are. I hope that you are able to inspire your students with the good that you do as well. Mahalo for sharing your story with us.

But, after I figure it out it was very easy to manage. What are your thoughts about it? It seems as though the animals are drawn to your classroom at WES! You have an extremely big heart to take on that responsibility and providing a home for those little guys. Your students must enjoy the surprises of the animals. I'm not very familiar with Powtoons, so it was great to see something different being used for this assignment. I actually think the application might be something that elementary students (or even older students) might really enjoy working with! Your presentation had a good mix of informative captions (I liked the use of different fonts and sizes to provide emphasis and grab the attention of the viewer), animations, and music (very upbeat). Your project was also well laid out and balanced so that it remained interesting/stimulating without being overcrowded or overwhelming. I did notice that the presentation was pretty fast-paced - especially since the viewer (speaking for myself, anyway) would like to read the caption as well as look at the illustrations and animations a bit. Overall, I thought this was well-made and I definitely enjoyed it!
