Week 11

ETEC 642: Week 11 • Nov 3-10 • Social Capital • Pinterest

Social capital is the value and benefits derived from social networking. Collective action results from the resources gained through sharing among strong and weak ties between individuals. Research shows that you will gain from networking by reciprocating. Benevolence is the glue that holds social networks together.

For a definition of social capital, see: About Social Capital, http://www.hks.harvard.edu/programs/saguaro/about-social-capital.

COLLABORATIVE VIDEO PROJECT
Continue to collaborate with your team members. By now, you should complete your shooting and begin editing your video this week. Provide your team with time to review a draft, so that you can revise it before posting the final version. Upload the video to your YouTube channel and post the link on our Google+ CVP community.

Make sure that your video is accessible by everyone in both classes.

Your video should be posted by Nov. 11, and individual comments posted to the other teams by Nov 17 (before class). We will have a final joint videoconference session to evaluate your experiences on Nov 17 during our BBC session.

WEEK 11 BLOG POST
Read ONE of the papers listed below about social capital.

Then, reflect on how much value you have (or have not) gained by interacting with other learners online. How much social capital did you create, share or gain, and why? What is the evidence that supports your statement? Focus on 1-2 key points at most.

Also, post a link to your blog post in the SM4Ed Facebook Group with a short lead-in sentence that includes the words "social capital."
